Dear Sun Prairie Football Families,
I hope everyone is doing well during these unprecedented times. It has been a very interesting year to the say the least. I would like to share with you our ideas for youth football in Sun Prairie this upcoming spring.
First, I want to say everyone's safety is the first priority. We feel it’s in our best interest to plan a 7 on 7 skills and drills league this spring within our own Sun Prairie Community. Right now in Dane County we can’t even play games. We are not sure when this will change. We also feel keeping our youth programs local is in the best interest of all of our families during these times.
This has not been an easy decision but one that we feel at this time is in the best interest of our families. We want to allow our players an opportunity to continue to learn the game of football while enhancing their skills. We feel we can do this with the 7 on 7 skills and drills model. This has been done successfully in other communities around the state.
We will practice twice a week while following the Dane County guidelines and working with the varsity program to set up all drills in the safest way possible. During these practices we will work on the skills needed to be successful at each player's individual offensive and defensive position. They will be taught the correct terminology and fundamentals of what it takes to be a successful Sun Prairie Football player.
Then on Sunday afternoons we will have a 7 on 7 game. We are hoping to have these games at the Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium at Ashley Field. This will be a non contact game and everyone is eligible to go out for a pass. We will implement the SP football program pass plays and make some adjustments to let everyone be successful. This will be a great opportunity to have a football in their hands, sharpen their skills, and have some fun together on the football field as a team. I know things will look different but in my opinion this will be a great opportunity for our players to focus on the little things to be successful on the field. This will allow all of our players an opportunity to compete against one another in some form of a modified game as well. This setup will allow all players to get in some work specific to their position as well as an opportunity to throw the ball around and have some fun competing against one another.
I know a lot of people want to play tackle football and that time will come in the fall. We want to give our athletes an opportunity to get better in a safe way while allowing them to also compete in multiple sports if they choose to. We really believe that all of our athletes should play multiple sports. The positive benefits of being a multiple sport athlete are endless and real. I hope to see you on the fields in the spring!! Stay safe and if you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
